Choosing your kit

Start with the movement you want most. The Pilates Ring Magic Circle works control and inner-thigh strength, the Pilates Mini Stability Ball adds balance and core challenge, and the Pilates Bar Kit with Resistance Bands brings standing resistance work. If you would rather not choose, the Pilates Ring and Mini Ball Set with Resistance Band pairs a ring, a mini ball and a band as a small first step.

They train different things. The ring is held or squeezed between the hands, knees or ankles for control work. The mini stability ball is used for balance and core stability with very little load. The bar kit adds a bar and resistance bands, which suits standing movements such as presses and rows. Many customers keep all three because they cover different positions.

Choose by how you want to anchor the band. Fabric Resistance Bands are loop bands, worn around the legs for hip and glute work. The Resistance Bands Set with Handles and Door Anchor fixes to a door with handles, which suits standing upper-body movements such as rows and chest presses. If you are unsure, loop bands are the easier start because there is nothing to set up.

Less than most people expect. A mat-sized clear area is enough for the yoga mat, blocks, bands and dumbbells. The Pilates bar kit and the exercise ball need a little more room, roughly an arm's span in front of you, so you can move without catching furniture. Everything in the range is chosen to be put away between sessions.

They are designed for home training rather than a commercial gym, so the focus is on straightforward movements and easy setup. If you are new to training, start with light resistance and short sessions, and check your ability and environment before you begin. Product pages set out intended use, and our journal has beginner guides.

Using your equipment

With something you will repeat. Pick two or three movements, keep sessions short, and add resistance only once the movement feels controlled. Our journal guide, How to Choose Your First Pilates Setup, and the routine in Three Simple Grip Training Sessions are both easy starting points.

Consistency matters more than intensity. Most home programmes work well with two to four short sessions a week and rest days in between. Training equipment should be used as instructed and within its stated limits, and you should stop immediately if an activity causes pain or feels unsafe.

The Small Dumbbells 2 lb Pair suit short, controlled movements such as presses, raises and carries rather than heavy lifting. Start with one set of ten to twelve repetitions, rest, then repeat two or three times. Our guide, How to Start Training with Small Dumbbells, covers this in more detail.

The Adjustable Hand Grip Strengthener trains hand and forearm strength, which supports pulling movements as well as everyday grip endurance. Our guide, Three Simple Grip Training Sessions, sets out three short routines you can follow.

Mats, blocks, rings and dumbbells are for indoor use on a level, clean surface. Use a mat under anything that could mark a hard floor, and keep bands away from sharp or rough edges that could damage the material.

Care and storage

Wipe them down after use with a damp cloth and a mild soap, then let them air dry fully before storing. Avoid harsh solvents and abrasive scrubbing, which break the surface down over time.

Store them away from direct sunlight and heat, and avoid leaving them stretched around furniture between sessions. Check the bands for nicks or thinning before each use, and replace a band you find damaged rather than training on it.

Roll the mat and stand it on end, and keep bands, rings and the mini ball together in one basket or bin so a session is quick to start. The range is chosen so a full home setup can be put away in a few minutes.

Air-filled equipment gradually loses pressure with use and with temperature changes, so expect to top it up occasionally. Air-filled balls should be kept away from sharp objects and direct heat when stored.
